Location:
Cambridge
Summary:
A specialist glazing renovation project was successfully completed at the Jeffrey Cheah Building in Cambridge following internal impact damage to a glazed façade panel. The works presented a series of technical and logistical challenges, including restricted site access, structural weight limitations, and the requirement to match an obsolete glass coating.
Through careful planning, specialist engineering, and advanced access solutions, the team safely replaced the damaged glazing while preserving the appearance and integrity of the existing façade with minimal disruption.
Project Overview
The glazing renovation project at the Jeffrey Cheah Building required far more than a standard glass replacement. Situated within the Addenbrooke’s Hospital campus in Cambridge, the damaged glazing formed part of the building’s glazed façade system and was located in a particularly difficult-to-access area. From the beginning, the project demanded a carefully coordinated approach that balanced technical precision, safety, and operational sensitivity.
Working within a healthcare environment added another layer of complexity, requiring all works to be planned and executed with minimal disruption to hospital operations. Alongside the replacement itself, maintaining the visual consistency of the façade was equally important, particularly as the original glazing specification featured a coating that had since become obsolete.
The challenge
One of the primary difficulties was the location of the glazing panel itself. Positioned approximately 40 meters from the nearest accessible entry point, the façade could not be reached using conventional lifting or installation methods. In addition, the existing floor structure was unable to support the weight of heavy access equipment, significantly limiting the available installation options.
The façade system also required specialist handling. The replacement process involved the careful removal of external components without disturbing the surrounding glazing or compromising the building envelope. At the same time, sourcing replacement glass that matched the appearance of the original coated unit proved particularly challenging due to the specification no longer being readily available through standard suppliers.
How the challenge was overcome
To overcome the site restrictions, the team developed an access and lifting strategy that combined crane operations with specialist rope access techniques. To provide safe access to the façade itself, an abseiler secured rope systems directly to the building’s steel roof structure, allowing the team to safely remove the damaged glazing and install the replacement unit with precision.
At the same time, extensive efforts were made to source suitable glass samples capable of replicating the obsolete coating used within the original façade. By carefully matching the finish, the completed installation blended seamlessly with the surrounding elevation, maintaining the architectural appearance of the building.
Through detailed planning, technical expertise, and specialist access solutions, the project was completed safely and efficiently, demonstrating the level of coordination and engineering required for complex glazing renovations in highly sensitive environments
The outcome
The glazing renovation works at the Jeffrey Cheah Building demonstrated the importance of specialist planning, engineering expertise, and collaborative problem-solving when delivering complex façade replacement projects within operational healthcare facilities.
Despite challenging access restrictions, structural limitations, and the need to match an obsolete glazing specification, the project was delivered safely and efficiently through a carefully coordinated approach.
The work was completed efficiently and to the high standards that Glazing Renovations prides themselves on.
