Project Overview
The Cambridge Botanical Gardens project involved specialist glass replacement and realignment works on large greenhouse structures. This greenhouse reaches the height of up to 12 meters, housing a diverse range of sensitive and exotic plants. The works followed previous storm damage and ongoing issues with glass panels shifting due to the high wind.
Scope of works
The project focused on replacing 20 damaged glass panels and realigning a further 20 that had shifted out of position. The work was carried on a greenhouse structure and required the use of specialist access equipment, including a 32 meter spider MEWP, along with roof ladders and scaffolding to reach different levels. All work was completed within a five day period.
Key challenges
One of the primary challenges was accessing the work areas within the 12 meter high greenhouses, which required careful planning and the use of specialist equipment. The sensitive nature of the environment added further complexity, as the team had to ensure that rare and exotic plants were protected throughout the project.
Another challenge was the wind conditions. This created difficulty when lifting glass to height, requiring careful handling and coordination to ensure safety and precision.
